Joan Wile, founder/director of Grandmothers Against the War, the New York-based group which has been struggling against the Iraq occupation for four and a half years, has written a book, Grandmothers Against the War: Getting Off Our Fannies and Standing Up for Peace, which is being published on April 29 by Citadel Press. At that time, it will be available in all major and many independent book stores and can now be pre-ordered online from Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com. Joan's book focuses largely on the events leading up to, during and following the arrest of her and 17 other grandmothers when they tried to enlist in the Times Square recruiting station and were arrested and jailed and then put on trial for six days. The arrestees, who later became known as the Granny Peace Brigade, received and still receive international media coverage. A portion of the book is devoted to a discussion of the Grandmothers for Peace International and to Lorraine Krofchok.

Grandmothers Against the War, founded in November 2003, holds a peace vigil every Wednesday in front of Rockefeller Center from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM. The highly publicized group has been demanding an immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq. Grandmothers Against the War also participates regularly in other anti-war activities, including the arrest and jailing at the Times Square Recruiting Center when they tried to enlist; a trek from New York to Washington over a 10-day period; a trip to Berlin to speak and sing to peace groups, and performances of Joan’s original song material, their Granny Chorus line dance, a comedy monologue as Barbara Bush, and dramatic monologues by famed actress granny, Vinie Burrows.
